Application of High-Flow Filter Cartridges for High-Precision Pre-Filtration in RO Water Treatment Systems

12th Mar. 2026, A newly built water treatment facility in Shangrao city, Jiangxi province industrial park, planned to use a reverse osmosis system as the core purification process to meet high-purity production water requirements. However, the raw water quality was complex, containing high turbidity, suspended solids, and colloidal particles.Traditional melt-blown filter cartridges produced large pressure drops under high flow conditions and had a short service life, failing to adequately protect the RO membranes.

To enhance RO system stability and extend membrane service life, the project team decided to install a high-flow, high-precision pre-filtration system at the RO inlet.

Engineering Challenges:

  • Large flow rate (60–120 m³/h) requiring fewer cartridges and lower maintenance cost
  • High concentration of suspended solids and colloids, which easily foul RO membranes
  • Limited installation space requiring compact filtration equipment
  • Required filtration rating between 1–5 µm with low pressure drop
  • Customer needed reduced operating cost and longer replacement intervals

Filtration Solution: High-Flow Pleated Filter Cartridge System

Based on the water conditions, the engineering team designed the following pre-filtration solution:

40-inch high-flow pleated filter cartridges

  • 1 μm filtration rating for critical RO protection
  • PP polypropylene filter media, corrosion-resistant and compatible with various water types
  • 30–40 m³/h flow per cartridge
  • Vertical stainless-steel filter housing, easy to install and maintain
  • Initial pressure drop <0.05 MPa
  • High-flow pleated filter cartridge technical advantages
  • Large filtration area—8–12 times that of traditional cartridges
  • High flow capacity per cartridge, reducing cartridge quantity
  • Low pressure drop and stable operation, improving RO feed-water quality
  • High dirt-holding capacity and extended service life
  • Compact design, ideal for retrofits or space-limited installations

Raw Water Analysis:

Turbidity: 6–15 NTU
High suspended solids
SDI (Silt Density Index) measured at 4.0–5.0

Implementation Process

System Modification: Removal of the original melt-blown filtration system, Installation of the high-flow filter housing with bypass line
Piping, control, and pressure monitoring points added.

Pilot Operation and Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of SDI, pressure drop, RO permeate flow, and membrane cleaning intervals
Pressure drop remained stable with no sudden increases.

Performance Evaluation

After three months of operation, monitoring data showed:

1. Significant Filtration Improvement

  • SDI reduced from 4.5 to 2.0–2.3, fully meeting RO feed-water requirements
  • Raw water turbidity decreased effectively, ensuring steady operation

2. Noticeable Cost Reduction

  • Cartridge replacement cycle extended from 10–15 days to 45–60 days
  • Cartridge consumption reduced by 60–70%
  • Lower labor and maintenance workload

3. Improved RO System Performance

  • RO membrane cleaning cycle extended from 20 days to over 60 days
  • RO production rate increased by 10–15%
  • Membrane lifetime extended, reducing long-term operating costs

Customer Benefits:

  • Effective RO membrane protection, minimizing fouling and blockage
  • Reduced operational and maintenance costs
  • Improved overall system stability and permeate quality
  • Less downtime and fewer manual interventions
  • Longer equipment lifespan and higher production efficiency
